Learning Letter

Kayli Beidler Learning Letter  03-20-2020 To reflect on the work I’ve completed in this course, I want to start with the text presentations. I found these extremely helpful because they were unlike any other project or presentation that I’ve had to do for other classes. It made me realize how many resources there are out there for any issue that you may have as a teacher and also just how important it is to keep those books and resources handy while training to teach and throughout my teaching career in general. The content portfolio project was beneficial for the same reason; that I hadn’t done anything like it in any other class. To reflect on past work is extremely important, and it is really important to practice as future teachers because constant reflection is what helps teachers improve (as you have taught us).  In readings and discussions, I found it most beneficial that we explored all of the Washing State standards and reflected on them, especially since w...

CCSS for Reading Literature and CCSS for Reading Informational Texts

For the Common Core State Standards in Reading Literature, I found the specificity and complexity of the standards to be a little daunting. I have always felt fairly confident in my ability to teach texts adequately, but there were a few things in these standards that definitely made me question that. For example, teaching students to " Analyze how an author draws on and transforms source material in a specific work (e.g., how Shakespeare treats a theme or topic from Ovid or the Bible or how a later author draws on a play by Shakespeare)," seems like a difficult task. This is because not only do you, as a teacher, have to know and understand the other texts and literary works that you will be drawing from to make the text being studied better comprehended, you have to make sure that your students have an understanding of these outside texts as well.  For the Common Core State Standards in Reading Informational Texts, I found the standards to be a little more basic and less i...

CCSS for Writing and CCSS for Language

I first looked at the Common Core State Standards for Writing, and there were many things that I thought would be challenging to teach. The actual composition part of the writing doesn't seem daunting to me, but teaching students to write narratives does. I have never been great at writing narratives, so I will definitely need to work on that in order to teach students how to do it well, an in order to be clear in my instructions. I noticed that all of the secondary education age range standards have a large section that includes narrative writing, so I will have to learn to teach this no matter what. As for the language standards, I feel fairly confident in the structure of English and how to teach it, and I feel that it will be one of my favorite things to teach. I am intimidated by teaching students who do not have English as their first language because I think it will definitely be more of a challenge. I feel like it is one of those things that comes with time and experience,...
