CCSS for Writing and CCSS for Language
I first looked at the Common Core State Standards for Writing, and there were many things that I thought would be challenging to teach. The actual composition part of the writing doesn't seem daunting to me, but teaching students to write narratives does. I have never been great at writing narratives, so I will definitely need to work on that in order to teach students how to do it well, an in order to be clear in my instructions. I noticed that all of the secondary education age range standards have a large section that includes narrative writing, so I will have to learn to teach this no matter what.
As for the language standards, I feel fairly confident in the structure of English and how to teach it, and I feel that it will be one of my favorite things to teach. I am intimidated by teaching students who do not have English as their first language because I think it will definitely be more of a challenge. I feel like it is one of those things that comes with time and experience, but I'm hoping that my linguistics class that I am currently enrolled in and some future classes will help me to be more confident in this subject. Other than that, the language standards seemed fairly straightforward to me, and I feel confident in my skillset enough to reach all of them.
